Aquabotix collaborated with Sakonnet DesignWorks to develop an underwater water collection sampler that could attach to the underwater vehicle sled and collect up to three separate water samples that could be analyzed when the mission was completed. The sampler needed to be completely mechanical so that precious battery capacity was not tapped.
Problem
New opportunities for underwater vehicles abound. Water collection samplers were big and bulky and would never fit in the compact vehicle size that Aquabotix was manufacturing.
Background
The idea was born a few years ago after a successful launch of the Endura Underwater drone. Customers were looking to collect water samples and Aqubotix was growing its offerings for different platforms. Aquabotix turned to Sakonnet DesignWorks to reduce risk and develop a proof of concept model that could be shopped around for feedback and patent application.

Water samplers are big & bulky.
We shrunk the sampler down to collect three samples of water in a mission. Our unit is strapped onto the Endura underwater drones sled.
Using Rapid prototyping we were able to build the entire unit and test it on the bench. Here we are spinning the sampler plug until it drops into the sample slot to seal it off! This unit uses the same magnet technology we used for the rotating module.
